‘LED lighting increases safety on Amels Vlissingen site’

On the former Scheldt site in Vlissingen, Amels has been building world-class superyachts since 2001. To this end, the company, which is part of Damen, has a 12-hectare site with production halls, dry docks, and sheds, as well as a large parking lot and a helipad, which were all fitted with sustainable LED site lighting.

The replacement of the site lighting was necessary because the old gas discharge fixtures were severely outdated and regularly failed. “In addition, the light output was insufficient, creating dark and unsafe corners,” says Kees Maas, Manager of Space & Environment at Koninklijke Schelde Groep (KSG), which manages Damen’s property in Flushing. “By switching to LED area lighting, we were also able to save significantly on our energy costs.”

Salt water-resistant and reliable

“To ensure a unified appearance on the Amels property and avoid unpleasant mixing of orange and white light, we decided to tackle all site lighting at once,” says Maas. “To achieve this in the best possible way, we contacted Delmeco Raadgevend Ingenieursbureau B.V., who summarized our wishes and requirements in a set of specifications.” Because of Amels’ location is right by the sea, saltwater-resistant fixtures were prescribed, he says. In addition, high requirements were set for reliability, light output as well as management of the fixtures. “To avoid ‘cowboys’ in the market, we looked for a local and transparent supplier with proven techniques. We found that in Bever Innovations from Zierikzee, which also replaced the interior lighting at our Vlissingen-Oost location in 2017. To investigate the sustainability and durability of the site lighting, we visited, among other places, the social workshop in Terneuzen, where Bever Innovations has its fixtures assembled.”

Easy to control

In anticipation of the replacement order, Bever Innovations was allowed to fit a new parking lot with LED area lighting. A total of 108 Ambiente area luminaires were delivered and assembled, in various optics/radiation angles and with wattages ranging from 22 to 180 watts. All fixtures are equipped with our intelligent Bever Smart Technology. Via an app on the smartphone or tablet, the fixtures can be easily accessed and managed. Among other things, the light intensities can be easily adjusted to prevent light pollution/light disruption in the surrounding area. If in the future KSG wants to connect the area lighting to the activation of the barriers, emergency button or evacuation alarm, this can easily be arranged thanks to Bever Smart Technology.

No light loss

With the Ambiente fixtures, thermal shocks and voltage spikes on the grid are a thing of the past. When the temperature of the LED board exceeds 80˚C, the Luminaire Intelligent Protection System automatically switches on, ensuring that the fixtures automatically dim back. Also, the luminaires feature a Light Normalizer that continuously measures whether there is a decline in light output, which – if present – is automatically compensated for. During the 100,000 burning hours, this results in no loss of light.

In addition to the Ambiente fixtures, Bever Innovations also supplied some LS Downlight LED fixtures in specific optics, which illuminate the logos on the facade.
