Extreme environmental factors, including very high and low temperatures (-30 °C to +60 °C), humidity, dust or pollution, as well as zones with fluctuating temperatures, different ceiling heights, difficult to access places and/or different lighting needs per zone, can present a major challenge for your lighting plan. Whether you need to illuminate a storage area, cold store/freezing warehouse, production hall, office building, outdoor terrain or car parks, standard lighting solutions are often inappropriate! “Each production environment, warehouse and/or office building has its own lighting needs”, says Jeroen de Jonge, former Sales Director at Bever Innovations, Industrial division. “That is why we always create a specific bespoke lighting plan, where we not only consider the (extreme) conditions, but also pay attention to optimum efficiency, productivity, safety and well-being of employees.”
Intelligent control
“Lighting fixtures can be easily connected to our monitoring system to automatically create a standalone wireless EOS network, which can be easily accessed and managed via the EOS app on your smartphone or tablet. Remotely as well”, says De Jonge. “Our intelligent lighting analyses information 24/7 about factors like presence, light intensity and energy consumption, which means your lighting plan and company processes can be optimised. For instance, routing bottlenecks can be identified, and new routes can be devised, by analysing movement detected by lighting fixtures. In addition, interfaces with alarm, fire and building management systems help to ensure effective security. In the event of emergencies, all lighting switches on to full capacity, which means the building can be evacuated quickly and safely. And all this without requiring major changes to existing lighting installations.”
Fast and safe evacuation thanks to intelligent (emergency) lighting
Health & safety norms stipulate that, in the event of emergencies, emergency lighting must immediately switch to 1 lux at a height of 1 meter. “However, if something really goes wrong, employees and visitors are better served by a lighting level of, for example, 100 lux at 1 meter”, believes De Jonge. “This can be easily realised thanks to our EOS technology.” If there is a power cut, power is supplied by the UPS and a signal is automatically sent to all EOS fixtures. “In this case, fixtures automatically switch to a pre-determined lighting level (100 lux at 1 meter). Once everyone has been safely evacuated – for example, after 30 minutes, the lights automatically dim to their normal level again (1 lux at 1 meter). This means employees who perform activities in high-risk areas have enough time to complete their processes and safely leave the building.”
Lighting only switches on ‘if you are present’
“Our LED fixtures are by default equipped with a Long Range motion sensor”, explains De Jonge. “When movement is detected, the fixture automatically switches on at a pre-programmed light intensity, bearing in mind the temperature in the room, the amount of daylight and applicable health and safety norms. If necessary, the surrounding fixtures can also be activated. Thermal shocks will be consigned to the past, as will voltage spikes in the grid.” Thanks to intelligent lighting, it is possible to make considerable savings in energy costs (< 90%) and CO₂ emissions, while never making concessions in lighting quality and safety.
Savings in time and labour
If the temperature of the LED circuit board exceeds 80˚C, the LIPS (Luminary Intelligent Protection System) will automatically be activated to dim the lamp. “In addition, our fixtures feature a Light Normalizer that continuously measures reductions in light output and, if necessary, automatically compensates for them. This means no light is lost during the 100,000 operating hours (> 60°C), irrespective of environment temperature. Because LEDs last considerably longer than conventional lights, this enables considerable savings in maintenance time and replacement costs. Furthermore, our fixtures also meet the need to reduce energy consumption.”
Duty to reduce energy consumption
The Environmental Management Act obligates companies and organisations that use more than 50,000 kWh of electricity or 25,000 m³ of natural gas (equivalent) each year to take all energy-saving measures with a payback time of 5 years or less. This is referred to as the so-called ‘duty to reduce energy consumption’. “The Environmental Management Act contains a list of approved energy-saving measures for 19 commercial sectors (the Approved Measures List or EML)”, says De Jonge. “The Act also addresses lighting. To ensure a payback time of 5 years or less, it is important to reduce the installed lighting capacity. And that’s where our LED lighting comes in. For instance, consumption is kept to a minimum because lighting is only activated when people are actually present. In addition: if lighting is not switched on, no energy is needed for cooling purposes.”
